Mutual isolation of the shore current source and the ship's electrical system for increased safety and to prevent galvanic corrosion of the ship.

A galvanic isolator consists inside two diodes that are connected in anti-parallel. When connected in this way, diodes allow current to flow in either direction, but only above a certain threshold voltage.
The isolator is installed directly behind your 230V boat connection. The forward voltage from the galvanic isolator is higher than the potential difference between the metals. As a result, this voltage does not allow conduction and as such a galvanic separator prevents the electrolytic current
